State basketball tournament update

In the state basketball tournament, nine northeastern North Carolina teams played in the first round, Feb. 21.
In the girls 1-A bracket, Cape Hatteras defeated Union 51-40 in the first round to advance to the second. In the second round, Cape Hatteras encountered Southside and lost 66-44. Southside won in the third round and is scheduled to play Chatham Charter in the fourth round.
In the girls 1-A bracket first round, Columbia played Perquimans and lost 66-19 and Bear Grass lost to Roxboro 54-31.
In the 2A bracket, Manteo played Roanoke Rapids in the first round and lost 55-44.
In the 3A bracket, Currituck defeated First Flight 51-33 to make it to the second round where Lady Red Barons were defeated by Scotland 51-34.
In the boys state tournament, First Flight made it to the third round of 3-A competition. First Flight defeated J.H. Rose 84-64 in the first round and East Wake High School 75-61 in the second. The Nighthawks were defeated by E.E. Smith in Fayetteville by a score of 63-50.
In 1-A, Ocracoke Dolphins defeated Jones 74-70 in the first round, but lost to West Columbus 62-49 in the second.
Bertie defeated Cape Hatteras 77-16 in the first round. Bertie won in the second and third rounds and played Tuesday night in the fourth round against North Hampton.
In 2-A, Manteo defeated Southwest Onslow 70-54 in the first round, but lost to South Granville 78-59 in the second round.
