College of The Albemarle (COA) has announced that the school has entered into a lease agreement to use the approximately 15-acre demonstration farm located on Creek Road in Elizabeth City. Steve and Robin Harris own the farm and are leasing the property to COA for a nominal amount annually, beginning March 1, 2023 through November 30, 2025.
Per the lease agreement, the farm is designed “to expose many aspects of farming to students, such as vegetable production, landscaping, forestry, small fruit production, cut flowers, and marketing of the farm’s production.” Students in COA’s agribusiness technology program and continuing education will utilize the farm.
Pasquotank Cooperative Extension Office is also using the farm to create a community garden.
COA stated it will look to expand the use of the farm further to include even more opportunities for employees and the community.
“The demonstration farm will give our students, employees and community endless opportunities for agriculture-related activities,” shared Dr. Jack Bagwell, COA president. “We are extremely grateful for the partnership with Mr. and Mrs. Harris and look forward to developing the farm into a positive and beneficial experience for the college and community.”
Robin Zinsmeister, dean for workforce development, public services and career readiness; and campus administrator for COA – Edenton-Chowan, said, “Demonstration farms are designed to provide hands-on agriculture and farm-related learning opportunities for students. COA desires to create a space where everyone can be a part of our learning community – what better way than cultivating this land together. We are excited about the farm and appreciate our partnership with Mr. and Mrs. Harris.”
