District Attorney Jeff Cruden announced in a March 15 press release that Brandon Kason Boyd, 24, of Elizabeth City, was convicted by a jury of first degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and interfere with electronic monitoring device in Pasquotank County Superior Court during the week of March 13, 2023.

Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Jerry R. Tillett presided over the trial. The case was prosecuted by District Attorney Jeff Cruden, Assistant District Attorney Monique Ferebee and legal assistant Janet Klein.

Cruden said, “there were no ‘winners’” in this case. The victim, Kaleb Mathais Bilger, 20, and the defendant were first cousins and had grown up together, according to the release.

“As you can imagine, the family is devastated by this senseless act of violence, which according to the evidence, was over a relatively small debt. The victim had on numerous occasions gone to the aid of the defendant financially and otherwise,” said Cruden. “I want to commend the Elizabeth City Police Department for their thorough investigation of the case and most importantly the jurors that gave of their own time and agreed to serve in this serious case. The criminal justice system would not work without the service of citizens as jurors.”

The defendant will serve consecutive sentences of eight to 19 months for interfere with electronic monitoring device, 14-26 months for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and life without the possibility of parole for first degree murder. Those sentences will commence once the defendant has served the 13-25 month sentence he received when his probation was revoked from his 2020 conviction of common law robbery, stated the release.
