The Pennsylvania man charged with murder in connection with the July death of his 4-month-old son has been released on a $2.7 million bond. Thomas W. Imschweiler, 31, was originally charged with felony child abuse. The charge was upgraded to murder after the child died.

On July 17, the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office, along with emergency medical providers, was called to the 700 block of Lakeview Court in Corolla in reference to a baby not breathing.

The baby was taken to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk. The child died a few days later. Based on the child’s injuries and preliminary examination results, a warrant for felony child abuse was issued. Imschweiler was arrested in Pennsylvania and returned to Currituck County.

On Sept. 17, Currituck investigators went before a grand jury and charges were upgraded to murder. Until his release on bond, Imschweiler had been held in the Currituck County Detention Center. He is scheduled to appear at a Superior Court administrative session on February 4.
