Home field advantage may have contributed to Manteo’s 20-15 conference game win over First Flight in the annual Marlin Bowl football game September 23.
After a series of penalties against both teams, Manteo was the first to score on a quarterback keeper about five minutes into the game. Amid more penalties and fumbles by both teams, Manteo added a score early in the next period followed by a First Flight touchdown called back due to an illegal receiver down field. Another fumble recovered by First Flight led to a Nighthawks touchdown and the half ended with Manteo up 12-6.
First Flight came back with a third quarter touchdown and extra point to move ahead 13-12. It was only a temporary lead, however, and with about a minute left to play in the third quarter Manteo responded with another touchdown. The two-point conversion – and only successful point after attempt for the night – allowed Manteo to retake the lead at 20-13.
Still in the game, First Flight held the Redskins deep in their own territory and caught Manteo in the end zone for a fourth quarter safety to make it a 20-15 game. But with more fumbles and more penalties, the game ended with that 20-15 score.
An unofficial tally between the two Marlin Bowl rivals credits First Flight with 10 wins and Manteo with 9.
