July is Parks and Recreation Month.

Dare County commissioners passed a resolution proclaiming and recognizing the special month in its mid-July meeting.

Dare County is loaded with opportunities to visit parks and engage in recreation activities.

Dare County has three National Park Service locations: Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Wright Brothers National Memorial and Ft. Raleigh Nation Historic Site.

Visit one of these sites that serve up information, walking tours, special presentations, kayak tours and beaches for walking, running, fishing, sitting and driving.

Jockey’s Ridge, a North Carolina state park, features a high sand dune to roll down and a soundside water site.

Dare County Parks and Recreation Department has numerous facilities in three divisions:

– Northern Beach Division: Youth Center at Family Recreation Park in Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head Soccer Complex and Kitty Hawk Park with dog park and skate park. Family Recreation Park in Kill Devil Hills serves up a baseball field, basketball courts and tennis courts.

– Roanoke Island/ Mainland Division: Roanoke Island Youth Center, COA campus with baseball field and skate park, Lions Club Center at Wescott Park with basketball court and Wescott Park has baseball/softball fields and a playground. Marshall and Gussie Walkway starts at the county’s administrative office complex. North End Park, the Old Swimming Hole at the airport with a covered pavilion and playground and a nearby dog park. Pigum Walker Park is in Wanchese with baseball and softball fields, playground, tennis court and covered picnic pavilion. Manns Harbor Park has a basketball court and playground. Pointers Field in Stumpy Point has a field for baseball and softball and a playground.

– Hatteras Island Division: Avon Playground, Burrus Field in Buxton with field for baseball and softball, Rodanthe Beach Access. Fessenden Center in Buxton has basketball courts, fitness room, playground, skate park, tennis courts and a field for softball and soccer.

All of these sites offer extensive sports programming for children.

Pickleball is a new and growing activity. Places listed on USA Pickleball’s website titled places2play.org for Dare County by town are Dare County Recreation Center in Kill Devil Hills; Dowdy Park in Nags Head; Fessenden Center in Buxton; Outer Banks Family YMCA in Nags Head; and Wescott Park in Roanoke Island. The incorporated towns also have facilities for recreation and parks for enjoyment.

Numerous businesses provide unique opportunities to experience the Outer Banks from the water, on horseback, in the air, climbing a wall or flying a kite.
