The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service began clearing work July 18, 2022 at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.

Vegetation has almost completely overgrown the canal that runs alongside Buffalo City Road and the goal of the current project is to clear vegetation, downed trees and other debris from the canal. Refuge staff will be using excavators to scoop out the vegetation, which will be temporarily piled on the road shoulder to dry before removal.

Increasingly clogged with vegetation, some portions of the canal are nearly filled in and this is hindering waterflow into Milltail Creek, stated USFWS.

Access to the Buffalo City Road public boat launch at the southern end of the road should remain open. There may reduced parking along the road and short delays due to removal equipment being used on the project.

Work is anticipated to last three weeks.
