County manager David Clegg recently handed Tyrrell County commissioners copies of the 2017 audit prepared by Cherry Bekaert of Raleigh, certified public accountants.

The auditing firm highlighted several financial aspects of the county’s operations:

-The assets and deferred outflows of resources exceeded liabilities and deferred inflows on June 30, 2017, by $14,617,979, which is the county’s net position.

-The county’s total net position increased by $223,425 from the previous year.

-At the close of the fiscal year (June 30, 2017), the county’s governmental funds reported combined ending fund balances of $2,769,488 after a net decrease in the fund balances of $616,714. Approximately 50.6 percent of this total amount, or $1,401,114, is restricted.

-Unassigned fund balance for the General Fund was $204,104 or 3.03 percent of total general fund expenditures for the fiscal year.

-The county’s total debt increased by $315,182 (3.1 percent) during the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2017. The key factor in the increase was the increase in the county’s other post-employment benefit liabilities and net pension liabilities.
