On Friday, June 17, 2022, NCDOT published the following reminder:
“The Rodanthe ‘Jug Handle’ Bridge is still an ACTIVE WORK ZONE. Vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians are not allowed on the bridge at this time. For your own safety, please do not trespass.”
Bridge contractor Flatiron is still trying to secure a corporation to remove the existing markings and paint new lines on the bridge and access ramps, reports Pablo Hernandez, NCDOT resident district engineer for this project.
The job calls for a company with long-line capability. The ability to run miles of markings requires a large piece of equipment with big tanks.
The delayed opening has allowed the Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative contractor finish installing hangers and conduit under the bridge deck without resorting to one lane traffic. Contractor Aptus installed the under-the-bridge infrastructure.
Contractor New River Electrical will pull cable starting in late June or early July.
Currently, work is underway on transitioning power lines from utility poles to underground to the bridge at both ends of the bridge.
