Charlotte woman faces charges after passing counterfeit money in Nags Head

Nags Head police arrested Matoka Yvonne Springs, 46, of Charlotte, for passing counterfeit $100 bills, according to information released Wednesday, June 8 by the Town of Nags Head.

“On June 5, 2022, Nags Head’s Police Department received a call from business located at the Outlets at Nags Head,” stated the Nags Head release. “The caller stated that it appeared an individual, later identified as Matoka Yvonne Springs, had passed a counterfeit bill in their store. Officers and investigators responded to the area and observed Ms. Springs moving from various stores with bags and placing them in a vehicle.”

Officers and investigators determined that Springs was passing counterfeit $100 bills and was receiving merchandise and change during the transaction. The release stated she passed the counterfeit bills in 17 Nags Head businesses.

Springs is being held at Dare County Detention Center on two counts of obtaining property by false pretense with bond set at $55,000. Additional charges are pending based on additional investigation.

Investigators have information that Springs passed counterfeit bills in multiple jurisdictions in both North and South Carolina, stated the release. Investigators are working to notify these additional jurisdictions.
