A purple gallinule was spotted in an oceanside pond in the tri-villages this past week on Hatteras Island.

Purple gallinules are shy marsh birds, using their long legs and toes to walk across lily pads and floating plants to forage for frogs, invertebrates and tasty tubers.

Purple gallinules live year ’round in South America and southern Florida, and in the summer, some will migrate to breed in the southern states. However, it is unusual for them to be this far north.
