This season’s first Northeastern Coastal Conference outdoor track and field meet at Currituck County High School turned into a marathon session Tuesday, March 15, taking more than five hours of competition to produce any winning teams.

With more than two dozen athletes entered in some of the day’s 17 events, competition between six area high school teams seemed to drag on forever before Northeastern High School boys and Camden County girls came out on top.

Scoring heavily in the sprints and jumping events, Northeastern boys built a large enough lead to win the meet without even participating in the final two events of the day. Currituck County boys scored double digit points in all five competition areas to place second and Camden County was able to squeak past First Flight for third place by one point, while Manteo boy rounded out the field in fifth place.

Girls’ competition saw Camden County score well in the sprints, jumps and hurdle events to take the team title. Northeastern girls also dominated the sprints and jumps to finish second with Currituck County performing well in the relays, sprints and throwing events to finish third. First Flight was a distant fourth, followed by Manteo girls in fifth and Cape Hatteras girls, who scored only in the distance events, finished sixth.

A notable double winner for boys included First Flight’s Warner Campbell, who dipped under two minutes in the 800 and also won the 1600. Leading almost from the start, Currituck’s Camden Lenz lapped most other runners in the 3200 meter run field and finished with a time of 11:22, well ahead of second place Samuel Head from Manteo at 11:42.

Girls competition saw a close 1600 meter run finish when First Flight’s Tatum Dermatas pulled ahead of Manteo’s Madison Flynn on the final lap to win that event with a 5:53.8. Flynn was just one second behind and Currituck’s Kylee Dinterman took third with 6:03 on the clock.

Although her teams were not among the top scorers, Manteo’s head track and field coach Melissa Mann said it was too early in the season to be discouraged by the times and distances her athletes turned in.

“Overall I was very happy with our team’s performance at our first meet in our new conference,” explained Mann. “We are a pretty novice team and they went out there and gave it their all. I saw a lot of potential and am excited to see where we will end up this season.
