Bear Grass teams defeat Cape Hatteras to claim basketball championships

For the Atlantic 5 Conference Tournament crowns, Bear Grass Charter’s boys and girls teams defeated Cape Hatteras in Buxton Friday, Feb.18.

In the girls game, Cape Hatteras led for three quarters. Going into the final eight minutes, the Lady Hurricanes had a six-point lead, 36-30.

With a just over a minute left in the ball game, Bear Grass tied Cape Hatteras at 40. With 15:7 seconds left, Bear Grass hit three straight free throws. Cape Hatteras scored one free throw and a Bear Grass rebound from a free throw scored two. The final score was Bear Grass 45 and Cape Hatteras 41.

Eight players scored for Bear Grass. Top scorer was Emilie Perry with 12, eight earned at the free line. Free throws were a factor. Bear Grass made 18 of 36 free throw attempts.

Scoring in double digits for Cape Hatteras were Chloe Flythe with 12 and Emma Del Monte with 11. Cape Hatteras made eight free throws of 18 attempted.

In the boys matchup, Cape Hatteras took an early lead. Bear Grass tied twice in the first quarter, but Cape Hatteras finished with an 18-14 lead going into the second.

In the second Bear Grass closed the gap and tied the score at 20. At half-time, Bear Grass had a decisive lead, 33-26.

In the third, Cape Hatteras closed the lead to four points, but a series of six free throws catapulted Bear Grass into a solid 52-38 lead.

Bear Grass won 64-52.

Two Bear Grass players scored 20 points or more. Cayden Council scored a game-high 23 points while Bryce Carlisle scored 20 points, 11 of which were free throws.

For Cape Hatteras, senior Ayden Paddock scored 22, including one three.

Both Bear Grass and Cape Hatteras teams are playing in the first round of the 1A state playoffs. The first round was scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022.
