First Flight High School runner wins state indoor meet 1000 meter run

After competing in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3A state swim meet in Cary on Friday, February 11, First Flight senior Warner Campbell changed uniforms and, on Saturday at Winston-Salem, won the NCHSAA 3A Indoor State Meet 1000 meter run.
Starting in an outside lane, Campbell dropped into second place for a couple of laps before surging to the lead at the 1:35 mark. Building a lead on the final two laps, Campbell finished more than four seconds ahead of the second place finisher with a personal best time of 2:33.50.
Campbell’s individual state championship helped First Flight boys finish 14th overall in a field of 42 schools. Currituck County boys were also at the JDL Fast Track and finished in a tie for 16th place with Union Pines. Currituck girls finished in a four-way tie with North Brunswick, North Buncombe and Franklinton for 17th place and First Flight girls tied with Southern Wayne for 29th place in a field of 34 teams.
In 1A/2A competition on Friday, Manteo girls tied with Princeton for 35th place and Manteo boys were 47th along with Riverside.
