The Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office released information Thursday afternoon, February 17 about an incident involving a Pasquotank County High School student.

According to the PCSO press release, on Thursday afternoon at around 10 a.m., PCSO school resource officers (SRO) responded to an incident at the school, which was reported by school staff to an SRO that a juvenile male had communicated a threat to a teacher “that the student would slap and shoot the teacher.”

The SRO located the student and faculty members in the hallway of the second floor of the school and the SRO and staff members attempted unsuccessfully for over 45 minutes to defuse the situation, according to PCSO. A second SRO arrived at the school and “both were requested by school staff to remove the juvenile from the campus.”

“With the alleged crime of communicating threats, SRO’s attempted to escort the juvenile from the campus. The juvenile refused to leave the campus and began actively resisting the SRO’s when they attempted to escort the juvenile off campus,” stated the release. “The juvenile then approached one SRO lunging towards his duty belt. The SRO stepped back and issued commands to the juvenile to back up and comply with the SRO’s instructions.

“The juvenile continued to actively resist the SRO’s commands and a Taser warning was issued form one SRO,” the release continued. “The juvenile still refused to comply with the SRO’s commands and the Taser was deployed to gain control of and secure the juvenile. After the Taser deployment, SRO’s requested that Pasquotank County EMS respond to render aid to the juvenile. EMS promptly responded to the campus and attended to the juvenile.”

PCSO stated that the juvenile was transported to the sheriff’s office where SROs spoke to the mother about the events that had transpired. The juvenile was released into her custody.

According to the release, juvenile petitions will be submitted to Juvenile Services for communicating threats, disorderly conduct and resist, delay and obstruct and officer.

“SRO’s have a duty to ensure that schools have a safe learning environment,” stated the release. “By this student’s actions, this environment was disrupted by creating a breach of the peace to the safety of the staff and students by threatening violence on the campus of Pasquotank County High School.”
