John 13:25, Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”

Peter has urged John to ask Jesus who was going to betray him. So, as John is leaning next to Jesus, he leans over and asks him. I’m sure we can all see ourselves asking Jesus the same question. Really, aren’t we all interested in who is guilty? It really doesn’t matter what the situation or the crime is, we want to know the guilty party. And we even know there is nothing we can do about it, but we still want to know. Right? And when it is none of our business, guess what, we still want to know!

But maybe instead of finding out who is guilty of whatever we imagine is going on, what if we focused on ourselves, making sure we are not guilty ourselves. And maybe we need to look deep enough to really find out the truth, to really not just look for the obvious, but to look in our own hearts and see what is there that ought not be. Instead of looking at others, we need to look at ourselves.

And let’s be honest, we all have things in our hearts that ought not be there. And we need to realize we are guilty. And we also need to realize that God can forgive us for whatever there is there. But we simply need to come to him, seeking grace and mercy, and we need to change those bad things and replace them with the good. Instead of who is it, we need to realize it is us!

Father, help me examine my own heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
