Due to the approaching threat of Hurricane Florence, Currituck County has issued a mandatory evacuation for the Outer Banks communities of Corolla and Carova to begin at noon today, Tuesday, Sept. 11.
At this time, no evacuation order is given for the mainland section of Currituck County. However, residents of low-lying areas are advised to consider leaving for higher ground due to the high probability of localized flooding during the storm. Residents of Knotts Island should also consider evacuating due to the possibility of flooding over the Knotts Island Causeway rendering that community unreachable by emergency services.
Anyone who might need evacuation assistance should contact Currituck Social Services at 252-232-3083. Currituck County will provide transportation and medical services for those in need who wish to evacuate.
Citizens should remember that Currituck County does not open shelters before the storm due to the low-lying geography and probability of flooding. All residents should consider evacuation if they feel their residence will be unsafe during the storm.
When evacuating, residents should take only essential items and remember to take their pets with them. The Currituck Animal Shelter does not accept pets for boarding during the storm.
Citizens should continue to monitor the track of Hurricane Florence and make safety preparations including emergency safety kits, evacuation plans, and pet plans. Citizens are encouraged to sign up for the county’s free text message alert system to receive updates on Hurricane Florence. Just text FLO2018 to 888-777 and you will be registered.
