At the Sept. 20 Board of Commissioners meeting, county manager Robert L. Outten announced the county was continuing to have issues in the public works department.

Specifically, the recycling program had one remaining employee. Outten reported that the department did not have staff to deal with recycling.

Outten will work on answering the question “what are the options?”

On May 1, recycling services in the county were pulled back to three locations: the public works compound in Manteo, the Buxton Transfer station and Kitty Hawk recycling center.

On that same day, recycling was shut down in Wanchese, Stumpy Point, Manns Harbor and Rodanthe. Public works employees concentrated on residential and commercial solid waste pickup and disposal.

At one time, Dare County was first in recycling among North Carolina’s 100 counties. As early as 2004, the county placed first in household recyclables.

In 2013, the county had the highest per capita recovery rate for common household recyclables at 279.59 pounds per person.

By 2018, Dare was still in the top ten counties: second in household recyclables and eighth in total public recyclables with both a per capita measure.
