Jack Reyburn Burrus

October 20, 1935 – September 4, 2018 

Jack Reyburn Burrus, 82, a native of Manteo, passed peacefully Tuesday, September 4, 2018, at Duke University Hospitals surrounded by his loved ones. 

Born October 20, 1935, he was the son of the late Mary Caroline Davis Burrus and Richard Orlando Burrus. 

Jack is survived by his daughters, Sarah Burrus Dozier (Kevin) of Raleigh and Mary Burrus Basnight (Mac) of Manteo; three grandchildren, Taylor Dozier of Raleigh and Jack and Garret Basnight of Manteo; and his children’s mother, Barbara Wise of Manteo. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, A. Delnoy Burrus, R. Irlene Burrus Wescott, B. Estelle Burrus Tillett, Belton B. Burrus, Eloise M. Burrus Sellers, Richard O. Burrus, Frederick A. Burrus, Thomas R. Burrus, Jule D. Burrus, Mary C. Burrus Scarborough, Margaret T. Burrus Williams and Samuel Z. Burrus. 

After graduating from Manteo High School, Jack attended UNC-Chapel Hill and Campbell University, both with athletic scholarships. He was an incredibly gifted athlete. He then served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. 

The owner and operator of The Burrus House Inn in Manteo, Jack was a true developer with the ability and initiative to stretch boundaries and make things happen. A member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, he loved the Lord. His smile lit up a room and he challenged those around him to be their best. Most importantly, he loved his family, friends and community. 

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall. Private burial will take place at Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives Friday evening from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
