Richard Edward Burke

Richard Edward Burke, 90, of Manteo, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2018, at his home. Born in Seattle on Sept. 16, 1927, he was the son of the late Margaret Wiley and step-father, Haywood Wiley.
Retiring from the United States Navy, Richard served his country honorably for 20-plus years having fought during World War II and the Korean War. He then became a licensed building contractor.
Richard continued his service to the community by devoting 10 years to the Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department, followed by an additional 10 years with the Manns Harbor Volunteer Fire Department where he retired as chief. Many of his hours were spent volunteering with Dare County Public Schools.
Richard is survived his wife, Juanita Faye Smith Burke; two sons, Richie Burke (Susannah) and Pat Burke (Misty) all of Manteo; and six grandchildren, Spencer, Skylor, Bennett, Gray, Davis, and Coral Burke.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018, at Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo. A graveside committal with military honors will follow at 2 p.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk, Virginia.
