Area athletes qualify for state track and field championships

At least 37 area athletes will be headed for Truist Stadium at N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro to compete in the North Carolina High School track and field state championships.
Michael McCallum and Mekhi Bias were each double winners in the 1A East Regional Championship meet at Pender High School in Burgaw last week to help pace the Manteo boys to a second place finish. McCallum won the shot put and discus throw and Bias sped to victory in the 100 and 200 meter sprints while Isaac Jarvis was also a winner in the pole vault to help Manteo gather in 89 points to finish behind Lejeune with 101.
Coach Melissa Mann of Manteo said after finishing in a tie for fourth in a field of 15 teams with East Carteret, all eight of her girls will be heading to the state meet next week.
Other results show Cape Hatteras girls finished 13th and Hatteras boys were 16th.
In regional 2A competition down the road at Newport, it was Maddy Wagner and Lydia Sillies each won individual events to help pace the First Flight girls to a second place finish while Warner Campbell was the 800 meter winner earning points for a third place for the boys team.
Currituck County girls took the 4×200 meter relay event and finished third in a field of 24 teams while Currituck boys were seventh out of 23 teams.
