After beginning construction in late October, the Town Common in Manteo is complete and is already in use by visitors and residents.
The Town Common is located at the intersection of Budleigh Street and Lord Essex Avenue and consists of 60 much-needed parking spaces, as well as a small green space, benches, an arbor, solar pathway lighting and facilities for cyclists including bike racks and a repair station. “We even found ways to improve environmental quality by retaining stormwater on site,” said town manager James Ayers.
Rose Brothers Paving, a division of Fred Smith Company, did the construction and Albemarle and Associations did the engineering work. The landscaping architecture was completed by CLH Design. There was also public participation through listening and public comment sessions as well as an advisory task force.
The project was budgeted for $732,844, but Ayers expects the final cost to come in approximately $100,000 under budget. The Town of Manteo paid for the project with the Dare County Tourism Board contributing $221,885 in grant funding. Dare County provided the land under a 25-year ground lease.
Said Ayers, “The Town of Manteo is grateful to the Dare County Board of Commissioners and the Dare County Tourism Board for the collaborative effort that has turned the vision of a Town Common into reality. The strong leadership of the mayor and Board of Commissioners in Manteo, coupled with outstanding community participation and input, has resulted in a project that will serve residents, businesses and visitors alike for years to come.”
