Manteo boys took first place and Manteo girls finished second at the Albemarle Conference 1A Track and Field Championship Thursday at Manteo.

Winning four events and having athletes place second in nine of the 17 events scored, the Manteo Redskin boys easily won their conference championship with 116 points. Perquimans County was second with 106, Camden County finished third with 95 and John A. Holmes was fourth with 28.

Leading the scoring effort with two conference championships was Michael McCallum, who finished in the discus with a 123 foot toss and the shot put with a 41 foot 1 inch throw. Other conference champions included Mekhi Bias in the 100 and Aldo Herrera in the 1600.

Bias and Herrera each missed being double winners by the smallest of margins when Bias placed second in the 200, just one thousandth of a second behind Perquimans county speedster Jasiah Felton’s :23.836, and Herrera finished less than two tenth of a second behind Camden County’s Dennis Gutierrez in the 800.

Continuing a season-long string of distance event wins, Manteo’s Tiffany Fenz easily won the girls 1600 and 3200 events to help her team earn 99 points and place second behind Camden County’s 145. John A. Holmes and Perquimans County tied for third place with 31 points each and Gates County placed fifth with 5.

In recognition of her efforts, Fenz was voted the outstanding female Athlete Of The Year, Jaylon Gurganus (John A Holmes) was named the male Athlete Of The Year. Coach of the year awards went to Camden County’s Tori Black for girls team coach and Manteo’s Melissa Mann as boys team coach.

“I’m so incredibly proud of our boys for defending their title as Conference Champions,” said Mann in an email message. “Each and every one of them contributed to this win and I couldn’t be happier for them knowing that all their hard work has paid off. I’m also extremely proud of our girls who took second. With only eight girls they scored 99 points. That is absolutely amazing!”

Mann commended her girls for competing in some events they did not want to be in in order to earn some of those points.

“I’m excited and ready to see what they will all do next Saturday at Regionals,” Mann continued. “We are blessed with such a great group of kids. I must also say our coaching staff is one of a kind. I’m in awe of the two men I get to coach side by side with every day! They have such a love for these kids that is inspiring.”

The Manteo track team is scheduled to compete in the 1A East Regional meet at Pender High School June 19. The 2020-2021 1A State Championships are Friday, June 25 at N.C. A&T State University Truist Stadium in Greensboro.
