At the May meeting for the Dare County Board of Education, Cape Hatteras Elementary Principal Rachel Benton recognized staff members at the Hatteras Island school.

– Kristin Gray, fourth grade teacher, was awarded a grant from The North Carolina Aquariums and Aquarium Society, through the Aquarium Scholars program. Her class received access to four learning modules, which included videos, standards-based lesson plans and activities on topics such as sea turtles, food webs, climate change, animal adaptations and longleaf pine forest. Gray was also tapped at a WAVY News 10 Excellent Educator.

– Hannah Cornish, instructional assistant and second grade virtual DLI English teacher, received a grant from Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund in the fall for about $400. This grant supplied the school with fun, STEM-based games. She graduated with her masters in elementary education in December and became North Carolina licensed teacher in February 2021.

-Trish Decker and Beverly Hagy, third grade teachers, were awarded a Dare Education Foundation Grant in November 2020. Lapdesks and seat cushions for outdoor learning were purchased for two third grade classrooms at a cost of about $800.

– Gabrielle Geddings, a low incidence exceptional children teacher, received a grant for $3,000 from Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative for a hands-on library. The funds will be used to create an organized library of hands-on materials specifically designed for exceptional students to help increase knowledge and skills by gaining a better understanding of basic academic concepts.

– Stephanie Tenpenny, Diane Brown, Jenn Augustson, April Oden and Manfredo De La Cruz participated for five nights in a North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Program titled “Go Open NC: Culturally Relevant/Responsive Teaching.” This spring, these educators worked with educators from across the state to analyze instructional resources from Ed Open to ensure the resources met Standard 2. The group also created a lesson plan tool to implement at Cape Hatteras Elementary to reinforce culturally relevant teaching.

– Shannon Gavetti, instructional assistant, graduated this May from East Carolina University with a bachelor of science in elementary education.

– Jenn Augustson, media coordinator, received a grant for $700 from Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund for a Little Free Library in honor of former Cape Hatteras Elementary principal Ray Gray. The dedication was held May 14.

Augustson also performed a heroic act.

On March 18, 2021, Benton wrote “we had a choking incident involving a substitute teacher in one of our third grade classrooms during lunch. The pod partner, Jenn Augustson, heroically delivered the Heimlich maneuver and saved the day. Jenn stayed calm and modeled for the students exactly how to handle a choking incident and staying calm in an emergency.”
