On Friday morning, May 14, the first turtle nest of the 2021 season was found on Ocracoke Island. It is a loggerhead nest, reports the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Shorebirds have also been active. As of May 13, 2021:

– American oystercatchers have 24 active nests with one on Bodie Island, three at Cape Point, eight on each of Hatteras and Ocracoke islands. Four chicks have hatched.
