Cape Hatteras Secondary’s Sandlot Tournament featured three baseball games and two special ceremonies.

The games were played on Saturday, May 8, 2021, under bright sunny skies with a sometimes stiff but cool wind.

On the playing field, Bear Grass Charter dominated Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke. Ocracoke slammed Cape Hatteras.

Bear Grass defeated Cape Hatteras 18-0 in the first game. Ocracoke defeated Cape Hatteras 23-5 in the second game. Bear Grass won over Ocracoke 11-1 in the third game.

A dedication of the newly renovated field house swept away some disappointment.

Before the second game, the Dare County Board of Education and administrators dedicated the field house to former sixth grade teacher Scott Day.

Scott Alan Day died at age 47 on August 24, 2014 after a courageous seven-year battle with cancer. He taught school and coached Hurricane teams, shaping the lives of many students.

Cape Hatteras Secondary Principal Beth Rooks said Day held students to high standards and created a classroom that was a safe place. He made, she said, an extreme impact on the community.

In her remarks, school board chair Mary Ellon Ballance said five years ago she set her heart on “getting the field house at Cape Hatteras Secondary School remodeled.” She said “I quickly learned that this is not something any one person can accomplish…” She thanked numerous people including board members and school staff.

Superintendent John Farrelly read the numerous letters of support for the naming sent by the community. “Scott’s spirit is here with us,” said the superintendent. A book of those letters was presented to members of the family.

At the start of The Sandlot Tournament, a loyal Cape Hatteras fan was saluted. The baseball program at Cape Hatteras saluted Tom Murphy for his long-time game attendance and support. Members of Murphy’s family attended.

Game 3 – Bear Grass Charter 11 – Ocracoke 3

John Jacobs Memorial Award: Parker Gaskill – Ocracoke

(John Jacobs was a Cleveland High School coach who died from cancer in 2017. Each annual Sandlot Tournament features a Knock Cancer out of the Park theme.)
