When the glossy ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) opens its wings, beautiful iridescent green, violet, maroon and dark copper colors are put on display, as with this one on the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.

When it comes time to eat, the ibis uses its long, curved bill to explore beneath the earth’s surface and below the surface of water.

They eat a huge variety of biologicals and botanicals, including worms, insects, lizards, frogs, snakes, crabs, minnows, snails, crayfish, shrimp and a long list of other items.
