Tricolored heron: Looking for next meal?

This tricolored heron (Egretta tricolor), photographed at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, might be up to something fishy.

Tricolored herons eat insects, small amphibians and reptiles, but their main diet is fish.

They’re not as big as a great blue heron. A tricolored’s wingspan can reach about 3 feet, while a great blue heron’s wingspan can reach over 5.5 feet.
