The National Weather Service has extended a flash flood warning for northeastern Dare County until 9:15 p.m.
Thunderstorms with heavy rain have been pounding the northern beaches this afternoon. The weather service says two to four inches of rain has already fallen, and more storms are coming. Additional rain fall of one to three more inches is possible.
Beach Road from Nags Head through Kill Devil Hills was under high water around 4:45 p.m. and standing water on the shoulders of US 158, combined with blinding rain, slowed traffic.
