Outer Banks Dementia Friendly Coalition is a resource to caregivers.  Supported by the Dare County of Public Health, the group provides money for respite care. Respite care is in-home care for loved ones experiencing dementia.  “We hope to reach as many caregivers as we can to assist them with everyday activities,” stated organizers.

The Outer Banks has the first dementia friendly Hospital in North Carolina and has implemented an in-hospital volunteer sitter program to safeguard patients with memory issues.

When you dine out at an Outer Banks restaurant, you may see a purple seahorse emblem on the entrance. The emblem signifies that these restaurants have taken part in the coalition’s dementia friendly staff training.  Those restaurants are part of the Outer Banks Dementia Friendly initiative that seeks to make the Outer Banks one of the first dementia friendly communities.
