Mallards in flight – what a sight!

On an early gray-sky morning, a beautiful pair of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) are photographed on the fly at Pocosin Lakes Refuge.

Mallards are omnivores that eat a wide variety of plants in and out of the water, as well as freshwater shrimp, insect larvae and earthworms. The female mallard has the classic duck quack.
