An 8-year-old child in North Carolina died Sunday after being accidentally shot in the chest with a BB gun or pellet gun while playing with another child, a sheriff’s office said.

The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that when deputies arrived at a home in the Stony Point community, they found the child had been struck in the chest with a BB or pellet gun, news sources reported.

Investigators found that two children ages 8 and 7 were shooting a BB gun and a pellet rifle at targets near the family home when the incident occurred, according to the news release.

According to the sheriff’s office, the child was taken for evaluation to Iredell Memorial Hospital, and while being transferred to Brenner’s Children’s Hospital in Winston Salem, went into cardiac arrest. The child was diverted to Davie Medical Center, where the child died.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is continuing.
