Dare County’s school board approve a testing schedule for secondary and high schools in the district on Dec. 8.

The proposal was presented by Keith Parker, director of secondary education and digital communications for the district.

High school end of course exams are required by the state’s Department of Public Instruction for four courses: biology, English II, math 1 and math 3.

Exams for both the end of course and career and technical education courses must be administered in-person at the student’s schools.

All teacher-made exams will be administered virtually. Students in these courses will not report to campus to take the exam.

Teachers are asked to submit teacher-made exams to the school principal for approval by Dec. 18, which is an early dismissal day and last day before the holiday break. Principals will review all exams.

All certified staff are being trained to serve as exam administrators. All classified staff are being trained to serve as proctors. A proctor will be present in every end of course and career and technical education exam session.

The testing calendar is as follows:

Jan. 7: First and second period teacher-made exams.

Jan. 8: Third and fourth period teacher-made exams.

Jan. 11: First period EOC and CTE exams.

Jan. 12: Second period EOC and CTE exams.

Jan. 13: Third period EOC and CTE exams.

Jan. 14: Fourth period EOC and CTE exams.

Jan. 15: Makeup exams.

Jan. 26: PSAT exam administered in all high schools. ACT will be given later in the spring.

School administrators expect teacher-made exams to be cumulative and measure the student’s mastery of the major concepts in the course curriculum.

Since these exams will be administered virtually, administrators are encouraging teachers to explore project-based assessments for the final exam. Exams can include a combination of assessment items, such as multiple choice, essay and free response, and project-based mastery assessments.

Students are required to take a teacher-made exams at a specified time on Jan. 7 and 8.

Final exams count 25% of a student’s final course grade and final exams must be taken to get credit for a course.

From Jan. 11 through Jan. 15, transportation to school will be provided. If a student knows bus transportation will be needed, call the school to get on the list. Breakfast and lunch will be served during examination days, Jan. 11 through Jan. 15.
