Free health screenings for those in fishing industry

Free health screenings for people involved in the fishing industry will be offered to commercial watermen, charter and headboat captains and crews and fish house and marina employees.

The screenings are set for Wanchese on Wednesday, Dec. 2 starting at 2 p.m. and Thursday, Dec. 3 starting at 10 a.m. at the Wanchese Community Center.

On Friday, the screenings will be offered at the Hatteras Village Community Center starting at 2 p.m.

The events are presented by North Carolina Watermen United and East Carolina University’s Division of Health Sciences.

The screenings will take 10 to 15 minutes and include asking some general questions, measuring height, blood pressure, weight and taking a finger stick to test for diabetes. Blood pressure and diabetes put people “at an increased risk for the severe form of COVID-19,” states the flyer. Those attending will be offered a free flu shot.
