Garage Band Charities has distributed $21,060.60 to two Outer Banks non-profit organizations.

The funds were raised through the OBX Rod and Custom Festival, a gathering of over 400 classic automobiles. The event happened in early October at 17 different venues.

Michael Tillett, Richard Quidley and Sara Hole, representing the Garage Band Charities, made check presentations to Children and Youth Partnership of Dare County for $10,020.20 and Dare County Motorcycle Charity Group for $11,040.40.

The presentations were made at the Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting on Nov. 16.

At that same meeting, Dare’s commissioners proclaimed November 2020 Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month in the county.

Across the United States, the disease affects more than 5.8 million people and their families.

In North Carolina, 180,000 people are affected for all forms of dementia, states the proclamation.

In Dare County, The Outer Banks Dementia Friendly Coalition, a non-profit organization, works to raise funds to provide services, education and support for those living in the county with dementia and their caregivers.

The commissioners also proclaimed November 2020 “Family Caregivers Month” in Dare County.

In 2019, about 479,000 North Carolina family caregivers provided 545 million hours of unpaid care for those affected by illness, injury or disability.

“Caregiving can often have a significant impact on the life of the caregiver and make maintaining the caregiver’s physical and mental health more difficult and put a strain on work and social life,” states the resolution.
