Recently seen at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, the pictured rough-legged hawk is an unusual bird for the refuge, for North Carolina and even for the entire southeastern United States, states information from the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Rough-legged hawks typically nest in the Arctic Circle and winter in northern states.

They are one of only three raptors with feathers all the way down to their toes.
