A 6-year-old boy was shot in the face while he was playing on a North Carolina school playground during recess, and a North Carolina sheriff’s office is looking for whoever is responsible.
The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that deputies were called to Lincoln Elementary School in Leland on Friday, November 13 after report of a child being wounded on school grounds. The child, who was reportedly struck in the jaw, is recovering.
Deputies determined that the bullet that hit the child was fired from a significant distance. Detectives said they don’t believe there was any malicious intent involved and that it’s likely someone shooting on private property was responsible. The sheriff’s department said while the shooting appeared to be an accident, it was “certainly negligent and avoidable.”
North Carolina Wildlife agents are joining the sheriff’s office in an investigation into the incident.
