Even a global pandemic could not stop N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center from holding their annual 4-H Poultry Show. The show went virtual and was held in October as part of the ongoing virtual Currituck Fall Fair (go.ncsu.edu/currituckfallfair). This was the end result of the poultry project that started back in June of this year. Youth registered and received two to three chicks that they would raise. They learned how to feed, care for and even bathe a chicken during this process.

Eleven youth presented their bird via a Zoom meeting with the judge. They shared knowledge they gained, told how they raised their chicken, pointed out body parts and showed off their chickens’ wing feathers during their time with the judge. It was not a typical poultry show where the participants are face to face with the judge in front of family and friends, but 2020 has not been a typical year. Things had to be modified and these young 4-H members showed that they have what it takes to persevere through the uncertainty of things life may bring.

Three classes of showmen participated and were broken down into the following categories: Cloverbuds (ages 5-7), Juniors (ages 8-12) and Seniors (13 and up). Cloverbud participants included Leim Fentress, Mason Murphy and Riley Foltz. Juniors were Lia Suthers, Sarabeth Forbes, JW Forbes, Avery Watson, Caleb Minton and Madisyn Fentress. Senior exhibitors included Summer Forbes and Sori Suthers. After all the judging was complete, the top showman in the junior class was Madisyn Fentress and the top senior showman was Sori Suthers.
