“Just devastating, just terrible news” was the reaction of Jennifer Fyke, the spokesperson for the Coast Guard Foundation, when she heard about the fatal fire in Buxton. Fyke said the non-profit Coast Guard Foundation would help the families of the Coast Guard families whose loved ones lost their lives or were displaced by the Friday blaze.
The foundation partners with the Coast Guard to provide resources to members and families of the service. In this instance, they can provide funding for short term housing, grants for permanent housing, essential items such as clothing and furniture and resources for the longer term health and well being of the survivors.
The Coast Guard Foundation relies on donations to fund its mission. Fyke said the families will need help for a long time. She vowed the organization will be there for the Coast Guard families over the coming weeks and months in an attempt to help make them “whole” again.
There has been an outpouring of local support since the fire. Donations to the Coast Guard Foundation can be made through their website: coastguardfoundation.org/
Cape Hatteras United Methodist Men are also assisting families displaced by the fire. Donations to CHUMM can be made on line at https://www.hatterasmethodistmen.org/ and checks can be sent to Cape Hatteras United Methodist Men, PO Box 1591, Buxton, NC 27920.
