Wednesday’s letter to the editor from a New Jersey visitor (“Kitty Hawk needs recycling program,” in the June 13 edition) complained about “very primitive” respect for trash being generated in Kitty Hawk.  However, more enlightened commentary, appearing on page one of the same edition, reported that “the market for recyclables has become pretty much non-existent.”

Even the New York Times, champion of feel-good green scams such as recycling, tells us that “it’s still typically more expensive for municipalities to recycle household waste than send it to a landfill.”  Similarly, a Duke University economist has found that “recycling hurts the environment more than sending everything to the city dump.”

Might exceedingly practical real-life activity account for much of the difference that we see in taxes, beach enjoyment, worship of trash and population shift  between New Jersey and North Carolina?

So much for virtue signaling!
