To the Editor:
I feel I must respond to the letter by Susan Stroud of Southern Shores. She cites Hydroxychloroquine as a “safe and effective way” to treat COVID-19. I beg to question her flat out claims with such undocumented facts.
The FDA recently cautioned against the use of the drug except in hospitals or clinical trials as the result of dangerous heart rhythms and even death in same cases of people taking the drug. To top it off, Stroud cites as her expert the controversial Dr. Stella Immanuel, a Cameroonian-American, who says she has treated hundreds of patients successfully at her private clinic in Houston with the drug.
Days after the doctor showed a video on the subject, and it was shut down by social media, for having mis information, the Texas Medical Board issued a warning. The board in its statement said it could take action against any physician who said they had a cure for CODID-19 without any real information or evidence. The board did not name Dr. Immanuel by name.
Stroud also said the pastor-doctor was treated unfairly by the media for her religious beliefs. By this I guess she means the religious group that the doctor founded. The group believes such things as sexual infections, miscarriages and infidelity are caused by spirits and demons.
But back to this dreaded disease, we all want an end to it, and hope with clinical trials it comes soon.
