“Making your own lacto-fermented goods like sauerkraut, kimchi, and hot sauce is easy! Join us for the second workshop of our summer series: pickles!,” invites Island Farm on Roanoke Island.
Owen Sullivan of Hay Point Fermentation will teach the ins-and-outs of making lacto-fermented, old-fashioned pickles. This type of food preservation method was used by traditional Outer Bankers and Island Farm is working to share the process through hands-on workshops throughout the remainder of the year.
The workshop will take place on Saturday, July 18 outside of the historic cookhouse at Island Farm. The workshop begins at 4 p.m. and the cost is $25 per person. Space is limited.
Participants will be taught the steps for mastering the process of making pickles in their own kitchen as they follow along and make their own batch at the farm. All participants will walk away with a batch of pickles that’ll be ready to eat in about a week’s time. The workshop cost includes local and organic vegetables, seasoning mix and all materials needed for a home professional’s lacto-fermentation kit.
To join, visit https://fermentationbasics.square.site/, email islandfarm@obcinc.org or call 252-473-6500 for more information. Pre-registration is required.
