Walking access to Cape Point is now available.

At 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 7, Cape Hatteras National Seashore opened walking access along with a tenth of a mile more for off road vehicles. From the current beach driving boundary to Cape Point is an 800-foot walk.

Driving access will enlarge Monday, July 20, assuming no shorebird nesting activity.

Mike Barber, public affairs specialist for the Outer Banks Group of National Parks, reported that last year, Cape Point was closed to both pedestrians and beach driving until Aug. 5, 2019. This year’s pedestrian closure lasted 45 days and the driving closure is expected to last for 58 days total.
