Joanne Kathryn Sherman Hammond, age 75, of Salem, WV passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at Emerald Ridge Rehabilitation and Care in Asheville, NC. She was born on June 21, 1944 in Oswego, NY to the late Joseph Sherman and Annie Wakefield Sherman. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Danny Gene Hammond. Joanne is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Larry Hammond; her son, Joe Hammond (Meredith “MerryAnn”) of Weaverville; her daughter, Deborah Fielding (Tim) of Rockford, AL; her brother, Martin Sherman (Karen) of Palatka, FL; sister-in-laws, Ceil Salvadore of Hendersonville and Debbie Hammond of Greenville, SC; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and very special friends, Darlene Thompson of Danville, VA, Karen Vernesoni of Buxton, NC, and Mary White of Hawthorne, FL.

Joanne loved to travel with her husband all over the United States and to several foreign countries while he was active in the U.S. Navy. Her banking career started in Iceland and continued in Washington State and unto North Carolina with Centura Bank; starting as a teller and diligently working her way up to Financial Advisor. Joanne was a quiet soul with a dry sense of humor, a contagious laugh and a gorgeous smile that lit up the room. More importantly, she was a Godly woman who loved the Lord and devoted time every day to study her Bible. Her favorite chapter was Psalm 119 which she had memorized. She was a member of The Forward Church of Clarksburg, WV. Joanne was a great listener and always wanted to hear what people had to say. She had a huge love for animals and was their biggest advocate. She started the first ever Feline Animal Rescue in Cape Hatteras and it is still thriving today. Joanne loved to stay active and eat healthy. You could always find her exercising and lifting weights at Planet Fitness up until only two years ago!

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m., Monday, June 22, 2020 in the Penland Family Funeral Home Chapel. The family will be received friends in Penland’s chapel. Pastor Mark Greaver officiated. A private family burial was held Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to your local Humane Society or no-kill animal shelter.
