Hugging a tree

Over the years, the words “tree hugger” has become a term used for various reasons. Consider the American Black Bear (Ursus americanus): if possible danger approaches, mother bears teach their cubs to climb trees and hold on. At Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, the pictured cub has climbed a tree and is hugging it until mother bear gives the all-clear signal to come down.
