Manteo Mayor Bobby Owens opened the Wednesday, June 3 Board of Commissioners meeting with a moment of silent meditation dedicated to the family of George Floyd. Floyd was the Minneapolis, Minnesota man who died while being arrested by police during a May 25 incident, which has sparked nationwide protests over police brutality and racial injustice.

At the end of the brief meeting, commissioner Jason Borland added a voice of support to a protest planned for Tuesday, June 9 in Manteo. The Dare Minority Coalition is asking for a protest to silently honor “those we’ve lost to police violence in 2020” and “to show we can all live peacefully and lawfully together.” Borland added his hope for a peaceful event.

Sandwiched between the opening and closing of the meeting was a public hearing to receive public views on the proposed $8.6 million 2020-21 town budget. Only one written comment was received by the town. Bob Keeney, who lives on Fernando Street, supported the proposed budget. He praised the town staff in presenting a balanced budget without a tax increase in challenging times.

The board is expected to adopt the budget at their mid-month commissioner meeting scheduled on June 17 at 5 p.m.
