The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has announced a new roof repair project for Mattamuskeet Lodge in Hyde County. There are at least forty locations where water is penetrating the roof and damaging the wood roof deck. This damaged wood will be replaced and an ice and water shield membrane system will be installed below the tiles. Copper gutters and downspouts will also be installed along portions of the roof’s perimeter.

The plan is to reconstruct the roof by removing the old clay tiles, repairing any damage, adding a new underlayment and replacing old tiles with a combination of new and existing ones.

In 2006, the United States Congress deeded to the state of North Carolina the Mattamuskeet Lodge, a nearly 75-year-old building treasured by hunters, birdwatchers and historians. Once a pump station, it became a hunting lodge in the 1930s. It was placed on the National Historic Register in 1980.

The repairs will be conducted by Huber & Associates out of Lake City, Fla. and Asheville, which specializes in historic roof renovations. Construction is set to begin on April 27 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of August.
