On April 14, the Kill Devil Hills Police Department addressed its response to a disturbance call as well as misinformation and complaints regarding reported violations of the state’s “stay at home” order.

A disturbance call came in to KDHPD around 7:40 p.m. on April 13. Officers responded to the location – Sandbars Raw Bar and Grill – and reported an intoxicated 38-year-old Kitty Hawk woman had assaulting another individual over a previous dispute.

KDHPD searched the suspect’s car during the course of the investigation. According to KDH Police Captain John Towler, an uninvolved party reported to a media outlet that the KDHPD had shut down Sandbars and arrested employees for violating the “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order.

“A reporter at Spectrum News contacted us,” Towler said, with the information received from the uninvolved party. “This is categorically not the case, but it does illustrate the perils uninformed opinion may have on the reputation of others,” KDHPD’s release stated of the unfounded report.

Sandbars was determined to not be in violation of the order, given its limited menu and curbside service.

The KDHPD release also addressed an unrelated matter involving a complaint made about N.Y. Bagels in KDH not being in compliance with the governor’s order.

Towler said this complaint also came in within the past two days.  After investigating the establishment, KDHPD determined there was no violation and N.Y. Bagels is operating in accordance with the emergency order.

KDHPD encouraged everyone to visit each establishment’s public social media pages for more information on operation.

“The Department appreciates the effort of the public to keep everyone safe during this crisis. We would request complaints about violations be made initially to Dare County Emergency Management, who will route them to the appropriate agency for follow-up,” stated the release.
