The US Fish and Wildlife Service is conducting a prescribed fire project on the Dare County mainland Saturday, February 29 from US 64 behind Manns Harbor south to Point Peter Rd., which is located about two-thirds of the way to Stumpy Point.
According to USFWS, the purposes of the burn are to provide wildfire protection to both communities as well as to improve habitat for wildlife in the area. When completed, the burn is expected to cover over 5000 acres.
“Be prepared to see significant smoke from this burn,” stated a USFWS release.
