Published 1:28 pm Wednesday, April 18, 2018

Earth Fair OBX VI at Dowdy Park in Nags Head will bring together a variety of organizations, including the North Carolina Coastal Federation, to help the public learn about environmental protection.

The free event runs from 1-4 p.m. on April 22. Representatives from organizations will be present with various engaging, family-friendly activities that will help people learn more about the many ways they can help protect the environment.

There will be opportunities to learn about how to implement earth-friendly practices at home, how to identify beachcombing finds or why alternative energy sources are important, to name a few. As part of this event, the Town of Nags Head will be hosting a town-wide litter cleanup. The town’s mascot, Nelson Nag, will be in attendance.

The federation will be leading activities that will help community members learn about how they can protect water quality on the Outer Banks throughout the year.

“We want to find a way for everyone to contribute to a healthy coast, and for people to realize that their everyday actions make a difference — from capturing water in rain barrels, using native plants or purchasing reusable items,” said Sara Hallas, coastal education coordinator for the federation.

There will also be live music by Nature Out Loud, a local family-friendly outfit that plays upbeat, positive tunes inspired by nature.

The following groups will be participating in the event: Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Dare County, First Flight Adventure Park, Jockey’s Ridge State Park, the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island’s Green Team, North Carolina Coastal Reserve, Network for Endangered Sea Turtles , Outer Banks Center for Dolphin Research, Outer Banks Adventures, Outer Banks Catch, Sea Change Partnership, Outer Banks SPCA, Town of Nags Head, UNC Coastal Studies Institute, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Local As it Gets and The Nature Conservancy at Nags Head Woods.

Dowdy Park is located at 3005 S. Croatan Highway in Nags Head. This event will take place rain or shine. For more information about Earth Fair OBX VI, visit nccoast.org/events or contact Sara Hallas at 252-473-1607 or sarajh@nccoast.org.
